There are so many critical issues facing our community, it's hard to keep our energies channeled into work that will make a lasting difference. This month we're focusing on three very important issues. They're not new. But, they are being brought to the forefront this month.
First, our third gay Town Hall Meeting will be held Monday, October 18th, a7 pm at CSU, Room 364 University Center, 2121 Euclid Ave. The first two were highly successful, as I'm sure this one will be.
At this Town Hall Meeting, Stonewall Cleveland has asked for representatives of the women's community to participate in a panel discussion on women's issues, locally and nationally. At press time, we had received confirmations from numerous participants. (See our ad in this issue for room location and listing of confirmed participants.) This is sure to be educational to all of us who attend.
Increased awareness and understanding is the goal of Stonewall's Town Hall Meetings. Through greater awareness and understanding of women's issues, how they are being addressed and how we can each participate, we hope we are helping to do our part in building a stronger sense of community in Cleveland. We are grateful to the women who have agreed to participate. I encourage you to participate by attending . . . both men and women...and bring a friend!
Second, this is the month before elections. Locally, Stonewall Cleveland has distributed surveys to nearly a hundred candidates. Our surveys ask each candidate to respond to specific gay issues. We will announce our preliminary findings at the Town Hall Meeting on the 18th and prepare our final report for publication in the Chronicle
in the issue due out October 29th, just days before this year's elections. Be sure to evaluate before you vote!
And third, Ohio is facing an attack by the right. Cincinnati is the first battle. There are sure to be more before the war in Ohio is over. The right must not win in Cincinnati! The volunteer work and monetary contributions that we make to Cincinnati will benefit all of us throughout Ohio. At our last meeting, the members of Stonewall Cleveland voted to donate $2,000 to Equality, Cincinnati, a coalition of individuals and organizations, both gay and non-gay, formed to fight the right. We will be taking further donations at the Town Hall Meeting.
In addition to money, Cincinnati desperately needs volunteer help this month, especially on weekends. Let's see how empty we can make Cleveland this month. Take a carload of your friends to Cincinnati and help make a difference now. Distribute leaflets, yard signs, make telephone calls, or help with office work. And if you can't go, send a check, host a house party and take donations, or send letters to the editor there. Your help and money are greatly needed.
Send donations to Equality Cincinnati, Box 271, Cincinnati, OH 45201-0271. Or call Equality Cincinnati at 513-269-9913.
Out Voice is another organization that will be fighting the right throughout Ohio. Jerry Bunge was recently hired to direct statewide efforts. If you're not a member of Out Voice, I suggest you contact Jerry at 800-700-JUST. He'll be able to answer any questions you might have. And, I'm sure he'll know how to make the best use of your volunteer skills, should you be inclined to join the fight. ✔
